Prenatal massage
The difference between regular and prenatal massage, is that prenatal massage focuses on the changes your body will go through in each stage of pregnancy.
Prenatal massage is best done after the first trimester due to the low risk that it may cause dizziness or add to morning sickness. After four months, it is best to avoid laying on your back because the weight of the baby can cause compression of the blood vessels and reduce circulation to the placenta. This is where laying on your side to receive your massage is best instead of face down or face up. There are specialized pillows for prenatal massage to support you as your body changes. I incorporate stretching, deep tissue and orthopedic massage therapy techniques, along with specialized prenatal strokes, to provide focus on specific areas that develop aches and pains as baby grows.
As your body adjusts tension can arise from your feet to your head. Prenatal massage can help relieve back and joint pain, muscle tension, swelling and headaches. This can make every stage of your pregnancy more comfortable and improve mobility. Creating this better environment in your body creates a better environment for your baby as they grow and develop. Prenatal massage may help balance hormones, increase circulation and promote better sleep.
If there are any high-risk factors in your pregnancy, it is best to talk with your healthcare provider to make sure you are cleared to receive or continue prenatal massage.
